Wonderful (true) story of a family with a trans child and how they were able to manage the(many challenges they they encountered as Nicole grew to adulthood. The book was beautifully put together, describing a complicated and often stressful story which few families would be able or willing to share with the world. It would be difficult to read this story and not have great compassion for individuals with gender dysphoria and their families. My fantasy is that if everyone read this book, the lives of LBGTQ people would be so much easier, and our culture would be so much more compassionate. It is not just educational, it is well written.
Nicole's journey to be her authentic SELF - her struggles for acceptance and understanding, first, with her family, and then, with schoolmates and teachers, and the legal roadblocks she had to face on that journey, were both sad and inspiring. EVERY child should be loved for EXACTLY who that child is - not who society thinks or says they should be. If I could wrap my arms around her and tell her she is beautiful, and just the way God intended her to be, I would. Bravo to her dad, for finally coming to realize that, he wasn't "losing" a son, he was gaining a beautiful and courageous daughter - and, to her mom and brother, I would say, thank you for fighting for Nicole's voice to be heard, loud and clear, and through all the fear and hardships you faced. May you all be blessed.
The book is a journalistic account, written by a journalist, not a therapist, regarding a transgender emergence. It is not a psychological explanation of what happened beyond the brain theories which were not footnoted for thorough study. As a psychotherapist, analytically oriented, this story leaves out much to say, especially the relationship of mother and father and their power struggle to create this child. It is not a clear study. In fact, misleading, for the cause of the trans is emotional, not biologic.
The story is inspiring. I didn't like how the book lacked chronological order. 1 moment I was moved from 5th grade to 6th grade and back.The style of writing was ok for me. I don't think I would remember much of the quotes in the book.
Becoming Nicole is an amazing, insightful look into the life of Nicole and her family as she navigates the complicated world as a trans person. As the mother of a child who is currently struggling with their own gender identity, I found this book both very heartwarming and educational. This book offers a great introduction into the struggles that trans people face. The author also helpfully includes a chapter on the science behind both physiological and morphological gender.
